We came to regret our decision of walking! Our hostel was on a street in the corner of our map, so we had to guess on which street to take to get there. After multiple dead ends and 1.5 hours of walking we sat down on the curb feeling very defeated. While we were sitting there a slug started crawling by us, which we thought was pretty cool! I don't think I've ever seen a slug before. It crawled on our map and left a trail of slime, that was pretty disgusting.
It turned out that the hostel wasn't too far from where we were sitting, we found it fairly quickly after our break. Our room was nice, it even had a bathroom! It was funny though, the bathroom was so small that only one person could fit inside of it. Sometimes when you lean over the sink to do your makeup or wash your face you fall into the shower (the floor for the shower was a few inches lower)!
By this time its a little after 8pm and we are starving! So we asked the guy at the front desk if he knew of a good place to eat. He said no, there is nothing around here. And we asked okay... is there a bad place to eat? He told us the only places to eat in the area are Mcdonalds and KFC. I was offended, thinking he said that because we spoke English. So we decided to go out and look for ourselves.
After about 45 minutes of searching, we found absolutely nothing. We even looked for the KFC and couldn't find it. We saw a vending machine at the hotel, so we decided to make a dinner out of vending machine food. The vending machine had sandwiches and microwave meals, which could make a semi-legitimate meal. Unfortunately the machine wouldn't spit those out, so we ended up eating Bueno bars for dinner. A bueno bar is like a Kit Kat, or a Twix without the caramel. They are pretty good, but I never want them for dinner again!
The next morning we woke up, packed our bags, and started walking to the town Tomblaine. Tomblaine was hosting a stage of Le Tour de France that day, and we were really excited to see it. Unfortunately it was about a 2 hour walk. On the way we had pain du chocolate for breakfast, which was so delicious!
We walked 3 hours carrying all of this crap! |
When we got there we saw a bunch of tents and a DJ and so many people. Its like a festival! The tour was a lot of fun, we saw a lot of weird people! People go crazy over this bike race. I have to say the weirdest thing I saw was an old man, standing on the curb facing the street, peeing. We had to walk past him to get to the street where the race began, and I saw him from behind and asked Evan, "Is he doing what I think he is doing??". When we walked past I found out, yes! Yuck. I wonder if people are allowed to do that here!
We found a pretty good spot to watch the race from. I still can't believe how many people there were!! The race was really cool to see, I got some pretty good pictures too.
After the race we walked about an hour to get to the train station. We had lunch on the way, where we tried our first real french baguette!
After lunch we got onto our train heading to Paris. More to come soon!
